June Festivals in Sergipe

Sergipe is one of the states of the northeast that best represents the traditional June festival. The variety of styles makes the São João in Sergipe the best of Brazil.

Folklore dance competition,
typical food and drinks and a lot of folklore dancing

In the capital, Aracaju, the lst day of June is received with a salvage of fireworks and in several points there are commemorations, from the traditional São João street, in the industrial district, going thru the Forrocaju, downtown and arriving at the forródromo of Gonzagão in Augusto Franco district. In all these places there are the "troca de mastro", folklore dance competition, typical food, drinks and a lot of folklore dancing. Everything at the same time.

Campeonato de quadrilhas e muitas outras atrações fazem o São João de Sergipe

In the countyside, São João is yet more exciting for those who like strong emotions, there is nothing better than trying the battle of fireworks in Estância, 68 km from Aracaju, in the South direction. The fireworks show doesn't expose the tourists and spectators to risks, because wire screens are installed by precaution measures. Unique in the country.

During São Pedro's festival the emotion doesn't end, it only changes place: Capela has the tradition of the Festa do Mastro (Party of the Mast).

The local population chooses a tree with the height of at least 15 meters, that after being carved during the sound of music and songs of folkloric bands, it is set back, decorated with gifts, in the middle of the main square. In São Pedro's day, a great bonfire is lit at the foot of the mast, when the mast falls down, the presents are liberated, at this time, a battle of fireworks begins, hindering the gathering of the gifts..

For those who prefer more peacefull amusements, Sergipe offers the best peacefull forró (folklore dance) in Areia Branca, at 36 km from Aracaju. This municipal district has São João, as saint. The municipal law prohibits the use of fireworks, ensuring tranquility and safety for the people, who can dance all night long, in the middle of the square to the sound of the best forrozeiros (folklore musicians) of the state and of the country.

São João in Sergipe has a little bit of everything, that is why it is considered the richest and most diversified of Brazil. There are still other options as Cristinápolis, l l4 km of Aracaju, in the South direction, that promotes a São João, with the charming countryside inocense, and Muribeca, 72 km to the North of the capital, that also celebrates São Pedro as a great party.

Besides the forró and the fireworks, another attraction deserves attention: the flavor of the typical food. Various dishes made of corn, beijú and peanut, are the best part of the northeastern food and have a special place in the June festival food variety. To drink, nothing better than the tropical fruit drinks, craftly handmade and highly enjoyed.

São João in Sergipe is like this! Happiness, amusement and fun for all tastes.
