Historical Cities
São Cristovão, founded in 1590, the fourth oldest in Brazil and Laranjeiras that shelters the Museum of sacred art of sergipe, with about 300 pieces of the colonial period.

Sergipe's folklore

Sergipe's folklore is rich and diversified. Many groups already extinct in other places of Brazil are still intact in Sergipe. There is a constant concern in the preservation of those manifestations. Every year the Cultural Encounter of The city of Laranjeiras is maintained, gathering folklorists from all parts of the world. Laranjeiras, in the month of January, becomes the World Capital of Folklore.


Parafusos

A group consisting of men in dresses and skirts, forming an allusion of how the slaves escaped from the mills in search of the quilombos - they robbed the dresses in the hanger and at night they danced thru the sugarcane fields simulating ghosts " assombração ".

Taieira

A group of strong religious characteristics having the objective of blessing the saint SãoBenedito and N. Sra. de rosario. Playing quexerés (percussion instrument) and drums (the taieiras), wearing red blouses, cut ribbons and white skirts, the parade proceeds along the streets singing religious and popular ballads.

São Gonçalo

A dance in honor of São Gonçalo de Amarante, that according to the legend, would have been the sailor that freed many women from prostitution through the cheerful music made by a viola (a kind of guitar). The dance is accompanied by guitars, cavaquinhos,pules (bamboo instrument), and a drum (played by the " boss ", an allusion of São Gonçalo). The group dances in religious parties and payment of promises.

Chegança

A dance that represents the fight of the Christians for the baptism of the Moors - pagan people of the antiquity, currently Turks). The presentation always happens in front of the churches, where a wooden boat is set up for the quests.

Bacamarteiros

A tradition of the Aguada settlers, in the municipal district of Carmopolís. The bacamarteiros commemorates Saint João's night (June 24) with dances, music and many bacamarte shots (handmade rifle). The group is composed of more than than 60 participants.
