Today with the finances balanced the state of Sergipe invests as a priority in education and health and, in consequence, our social indicators present considerable improvements. The execution of several emergency programs in the areas of education and health starting from 1995, gave to Sergipe the recognition of international entities like UNICEF that attributed to our state the prize for the work of child attendance and their mothers that allowed the reduction of the infant mortality from 50 thousand before 1995, for 30 thousand now. In education, UNICEF considered Sergipe as the best northeastern state with the best efforts in the area of the teaching elementary and high schools. Sergipe is the second best Brazilian state in rate of children's education from 5 to 6 years of age. In the 75 municipal districts, starting from last year, elementary and high school courses were activated and was the one state that offered more vacancies in the pré-school. Sergipe is now attracting great investments in the industrial area. Last year, Brahma inaugurated in our state one of the largest breweries in the country, with an investment of 170 million dollars. The Vale do Rio Doce, a government owned company that was recently sold out to private enterprizes operates in Sergipe as the only potassium mine in the Southern Hemisphere, it undertook an understanding for the installation of a steel plant that will use natural gas as fuel and it will demand an investment of 500 million dollars. Besides, understandings are being concluded for the installation of a thermoelectrical plant. Next June the new airport of Aracaju will be being inaugurated, with increased passengers facilities and lengthened runway, allowing the operation of wide-body aircraft that cover the international routes.
