Albano Franco's words, Governor of the State of Sergipe

Eco tourism in Sergipe
The ecoturist that comes to Sergipe only needs to arrange his backpack, prepare his heart and not forget to put film in the camera.

June Festivals in Sergipe
São João in Sergipe has a little bit of everything, that is why it is considered the richest and most diversified of Brazil.

Folklore
Sergipe's folklore is rich and diversified. Many groups already extinct in other places of Brazil are still intact in Sergipe.

Great Route
Anyone who thinks that the main tourist attractions of Sergipe are just summarized into beaches, reserves and dunes, is completely wrong.

Historical Cities
São Cristovão, founded in 1590, the fourth oldest in Brazil and Laranjeiras that shelters the Museum of sacred art of sergipe, with about 300 pieces of the colonial period.

PLATEAU OF NEÓPOLIS:
PROJECT OF AN IRRIGATED FRUIT GROWING

LOCALIZATION AND AREA

The project is located in Sergipe State along the right bank of São Francisco River, in the low valley, covering the towns of Neópolis, Japoatã, Pacatuba and Santana do São Francisco.

It is approximately 92 km from Aracaju, 210 km from Maceió and 67 km from Sergipe Harbour.

The direct areas of influence are a total of 10.432 ha, which provides an irrigatable area of 7.230 ha.

Plaeau of Neópolis - Sergipe

OBJECTIVES

  • RATIONAL UTILIZATION OF THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES, TO INCREMENT OF AGRICULTURAL OUTPUT;
  • DIVERSIFICATION OF AGRICULTURAL AND AGRI-INDUSTRY OUTPUT, MAKING A FEASIBLE
  • DEVELOPMENT OF AGROEXPORT;
  • INCREMENT OF OUTPUT LEVELS, PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITABILITY OF CULTIVATION;
  • CONTRIBUTION TO THE GROWTH OF EMPLOYMENT AND INCOME IN THE RURAL AREA.
PATTERNS OF CULTURE AND MODULES OF EXPORT

In accordance with the objectives and the concept of planning, it was selected the cultivation of mango, acerola, pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, banana, grape, fig, date, kiwi fruit, dwarf coconut, cashew and citrus.

In defining this, we need to take into account the orientation of Sergipe Government, translated to the following:

Introduce the exporting fruit growing with the possibility of choosing profitable cultivation products that have good potential in the domestic market.

Promote fruit growing development and entrepreneurial models with an aim towards advanced technology. This in turn will integrate the agri-industry, with efficient management.

The project is divided in 33 entrepreneurial modules of exportation. Each project covers an area that changes according to the proposed cultivation, which will vary from 20 to 720 ha.

This project is a partnership paragon between state and entrepreneurs, which has shown a successful enterprise in several countries all over the world. Mainly in well-developed countries such as the Western U.S (California and Arizona). A project of this nature is a pioneering effort for Brazil.The implementation of this project will include working with Peru and receiving merchadising support from Chile. This is an important factor because Peru and Chile have experience in the business of exporting irrigated fruit.

PROJECT ENGINEERING

  • UNIT OF IRRIGATION
    • Not being able to irrigate the entrepreneurial modules, in its entirety, with only one parallel intake (water is delivered from the channel to the property), the projected area becomes 53 units to irrigate. This denominates the ground surface, which can then be irrigated by a parallel intake. In all events, one or the joint of two or more units of ongoing irrigation will form the exploitation module.
    • Having the capacity of delivering water to the 53 units of irrigation, it was necessary to plan the building of 01 main channel, 07 lateral channels, 03 sub-lateral channels, 01 extension channel, thus totalling 53 km in channels of irrigation.
    • These units have an irrigation surface changing from 22 ha to 283 ha, with a medium value of 131 ha.

  • SYSTEM OF IRRIGATION
    In order to initialize the project, the following hydro-agricultural equipments is required:
    • Main Pumping Station located by the banks of the São Francisco River. The pumping required will be 3,74 m3/s. The manometer height will be 122,08 m., and pumping will be made through a set of 8 centrifugal pumps of parallel vertical axle;
    • A system of channels for irrigation, with a length requirement of 53,2 km of trapezoid section. This will need to be sheltered with concrete;
    • Three pump stations will be located along the principal channel, to repump the outflow of 0,67, 2,43 and 1,53 m3/s. The geometric unevennesses to overcome in each elevation will be of 9,13 and 5,2 m, respectively;
    • Approximately 244 structures (security weirs, floodgate, flow measurers, lateral intakes, parallel intakes, input pipes, points, falls, final discharges and input pipe discharges), built along the channels;
    • Labor and equipment for parcel irrigation of 55 units of irrigation, such as: compensatory reservoirs, pressurization stations and equipments for irrigation by conventional sprinkler (for pineapple field) to micro sprinkler irrigation and drip (for the other fruit fields).
COSTS, BENEFITS AND PROFTABILITY

Once the project is stabilize, the annual costs of management, operation and maintenance, including the costs at the level of each cultivation, will be estimated to be about 9.3 million US Dollars. This will in turn make the gross value of annual output in the area of 400 million US Dollars.

The increasing demand for products in the tropical fruit growing , as well as the ease of transporting the harvest, leads to a profitable return on the 10th year, for each 100 US Dollars applied to the investment.

ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT

The Project was created aiming the eficient utilization of the available resources, the diversification of the agricultural and agri-industry output, the increasing of levels of output, produtivity and profitability, thus creating employment and income for rural families.

The institutional model is named "Mixture", and the Department of Public Power will do the planning and building of the infrastructure for irrigation out of the parcels or output models. It would be the responsability of the private entreprise to invest on the parcels and implement the process of production and trade.

The Administrative Structure will be somewhat of a "joint ownership", which will be organized by the beneficiaries, without the participation of the State.

ASCONDIR (Association of the Concessionaires of the Irrigation District of the Plateau of Neópolis) has already built this "joint ownership".
