Great Route
The catamarans are the tourist vessels that navigate the bends in the rivers. In Aracaju, they operate in the rivers Poxim and Vaza-Barris. During the tour they wind through the Preserved growth of mangroves, islands and deserted beaches
Anyone who thinks that the main tourist attractions of Sergipe are just summarized into beaches, reserves and dunes, is completely wrong. In the heart of the rural sergipano region, there is an unequaled wealth, of one of the largest unexplored regions of the country's largest tourist potentials-the area of Canindé of San Francisco, 196 km north of Aracaju, where, without damaging and thus preserving the environment, The Xingo hydroelectric plant was built, the largest Brazilian civilian dam project of the end of this century.
A team of professionals in archaeology, after several excavations, discovered in the Xingo one of the largest archaeological sites of the country, dated more than 3000 years. A great part of this material composes the Eco Museum's archives that are installed in the Xingo Parque Hotel.
Rio Francisco's Canyons - a gigantic gorge imbedded in the middle of the wastelands of the interior, are located after the Xingo hydroelectric scheme. In some places the walls are up to 50 meters high, and the water to 170 m deep.
There are 170 km of beautiful calm beaches. Caueira, Saco, Pontal, Abaís and Mangue seco (in the territory of Bahia but with the main access from Sergipe) are the most popular on the south coast. On the north coast, Pirambu, Ponto de Mangues and cabeco-this last one is an island in the mouth of the São Francisco's river, one side of the island is bathed by the river and the other by the sea, an awesome spectacle!
